ARMADALE

In November 2008, it was announced that Armadale has been chosen as the pilot area for the West Lothian Healthy Weight Initiative and, as a result, it will receive funding of £50,000 for the next three years from the Health Improvement Fund.

The Armadale Partnership will develop the programme to promote healthy eating and physical activity in the local community.

'Put Your West Foot Forward in Armadale'  A programme of led walks and encourages people to be more active through walking.

  • Walks take place every Tuesday, beginning at 10.00am, although new walkers are asked to arrive at 9.45am to register.
  • All walks finish at the same location as started from. Walkers are advised to wear weather appropriate clothing & comfortable footwear.
  • 2 levels of walk are available each week:
Level 1 walks are designed for beginners and those recovering from illness. They tend to be approx 20-30 minutes on flat even ground.
Level 2 walks are for those able to cope with  longer distances with some uneven ground and more hilly. They tend to be about 40-60 minutes
  • The walks have two walk leaders, one at the front and back, so walkers can set the pace to suit themselves.
  • Walking briskly for 30 minutes everyday can improve and maintain your health.
  • So what are you waiting for? It’s free, simple, suitable for those new to exercise and it’s on your doorstep!
  • Contact Rili Craig, Health Walk Development Officer on 01506 775207

No booking is required and walkers are advised to turn up in weather-appropriate clothing and comfortable footwear.

Bathgate Curling Club was formed in 1811 and it is one of the oldest curling clubs in the country.  Our bi-centenary is in 3 years' time, and so we have been playing for nearly 200 years!  As the home of curling is Scotland, we have a long history of winning many major tournaments, including an Olympic Gold medal, at World and European levels.

Our Club has a number of members who have played at the highest level and who have won.  One of our members has won the Men's Senior Trophy; and one of our lady members has won the Scottish Mixed Seniors for three consecutive years.  Two lady members have been runners-up in the Scottish Ladies Seniors, and they were also in the rink which won the prestigious Henderson Bishop Trophy.  One of our rinks went on to the Province Finals for Scotland.

Two of our members are qualified coaches and they would be willing to give pre-season coaching to prospective new members prior to next season's commencement in October.

The Club draws its present pool of players from a fairly broad area around Bathgate, (from Armadale, Bathgate, Blackburn, Blackridge, Linlithgow, Fauldhouse, Westfield and Airdrie).  Members are usually able to provide transport to non-drivers.  We would be particularly interested in recruiting younger male and female members. As our Club has a mixed membership, we try to play balanced mixed teams wherever possible.

Bathgate Golf Club began on 12 May 1892 when 13 local men met in the Working Men's Institute reading Room and formally established a course and a Club, which was opened on 22 June 1892 by the Master of the Edinburgh Merchant Company.  The Company owned the ground, which they leased to the club for 9 years.

The initial nine-pole course was designed by William Park junior of Musselburgh.  Between 1904-1906, the course was increased to 18 holes with a total length of 5,180 yards.  The new course was opened on 11 may 1907 and the first exhibition match was played by Ben Sayers (North Berwick) and Willie Fernie (Troon), partnered by Club members A.W. Robertson Durham and Stair A. Gillon.

In 1935, the course was developed further following recommendations from course architect, James Braid.  Although the Club was able to negotiate a long lease of 20 years, in 1935, World War II caused restrictions.  In 1939, army huts and a searchlight battery were erected on the sixth, seventh and eighth holes.  In 1940, tree trunks were sited on the fairways to prevent German aircraft from landing.

In 1979, Edinburgh Merchant Company sold the land, which constituted the majority of the course,  to the Club, paid for by a £100 levy on each Club member, payable over five years.  In 1984, the remaining land, which housed the clubhouse and two remaining holes, was acquired from North British Steel.

Since the 1980s, 10,000 trees have been planted around the course, which also includes the former site of Bathgate Castle (the dowry gift to Walter Stewart on the occasion of his marriage to Marjorie, daughter of King Robert the Bruce).

Par of the Bathgate Golf Club course, which now measures 6,328 yards, is 71.  The course record of 58 is held by former Ryder Cup Captain Sam Torrance

During the Club's existence, it has produced two Ryder Cup Captains, Eric Brown and Bernard Gallacher.

The Youth Drop-in Café has reopened in Blackridge at the top centre for young people.

Aimed at S2 to S6,
the club is available every Wednesday night from 7.30pm to 9pm and offers free food, hot drinks, sports
and internet access.  Info: Claire.kane2@wled (Posted February 2009)
